New solar EV canopy goes up in Connecticut

solar-EV-canopy-stamfordStamford, Conn. is getting a new solar EV charging station. According to StamfordAdvocate.Com, a 3 kW solar canopy with spaces to charge two EVs is being installed with help from a $83k block grant from the Department of Energy (DOE). The station is expected to go online within the month.

Erin McKenna, a Stamford city associate planner overseeing the project told StamfordAdvocate.Com that the charging station is a step toward meeting expected demand from owners of electric vehicles.

“We wanted to put it in as prominent a place downtown as we could,” McKenna said. “The display will show how much energy the solar panels provide compared to the amount of energy used.”

The system also will include a display featuring a gauge showing reductions in carbon dioxide emissions and the gallons of gasoline saved, Elliot Isban, chief executive officer of the project’s contractor, American Solar & Alternative Power told StamfordAdvocate.Com.

“This will provide energy for 25 years with no moving parts, no noise, and no pollution. I think that’s elegant,” noted Isban.
