Sierra Club’s oil freedom pitch a bit misleading

freedom-from-oileditors-blog-entry3Now, I’m all for the Sierra Club’s new Freedom from Oil Campaign. But I have to admit, I don’t quite completely get it.

You see, the environmental organization is pushing its members to lobby the Obama Administration to set a 60 mpg standard for new cars sold in the U.S. between 2017 and 2025.

That’s a fantastic standard. But, as far as I can tell, it still involves tens of millions of cars and light trucks running on oil.

True, some of that 60 mpg average, can, and, ideally, will be achieved by way of plug-in cars, including pure electrics, bringing up the average. But, as far as I can tell, this particular Sierra Club campaign isn’t calling for 100 percent of new vehicles in the U.S. sold starting in 2017 to be pure electrics.

Which means it really isn’t a “Freedom from Oil Campaign” after all.

“Freedom from Oil” has a great ring to it, but a more accurate phrase would be something like, “Partial Freedom from Oil Campaign,” or “Getting off of Oil Campaign” – something that indicates that this campaign isn’t actually about getting the U.S. transportation sector completely off of oil, although, frankly, I wish it were…
