More solar EV charging stations to add to map

solar-ev-charge-ucfSolarChargedDriving.Com is the only English-language source on the web that we know of which is trying to keep track of all of the solar-powered EV charging stations in the world.

(We just discovered a cool German web site – solartankstelle.com [translation = solargasstation.com] – which has mapped what appear to be hundreds of solar-powered-EV charging stations in Germany!]

On our end, we’re mapping everything we can on our exclusive Global Map of Solar-Powered EV Charging Stations.

Creating an online map of solar-powered EV charging stations is important. But it’s not easy for one person, plus an occasional intern, to do. Which is why we haven’t been able to plot all the solar-powered EV stations out there.

Below are a few we had missed but recently found and which we’ve just added to our exclusive online map of solar-powered EV charging stations, which now has 46 entries.

As always, if you know of a solar-powered EV charging station that we’ve missed, please e-mail us at [email protected] and we’ll add the station to our map.

United Solar Systems Corp., under contract with Central and Southwest Services (CSW), Inc., designed and installed a 4 kW AC grid-connected solar electric vehicle charging station in Longview, Texas. The system consists of 42 UNI-SOLAR Structural Standing Seam metal roofing panels, a combiner box, a 5.5 kW Trace inverter, safety disconnects and grid-interconnection equipment. In addition, a distribution panel at the facility is designed to allow recharging of up to six electric vehicles.

University of Central Florida
The solar-powered EV charging station at the University of Central Florida in Orlando, Fla. boasts 9.6 kW of power and 4 EV charging stations and generates an average of 50 kWh per day, or enough to power about 175 EV miles daily.

The station has been placed strategically near the UCF engineering department as well as in a highly visible spot in order to draw as much public attention as possible to the potential of the solar + electric vehicle combination.

Oak Ridge National Laboratory, Tennessee
With 125 solar-assisted electric vehicle charging stations to be built from Knoxville to Memphis, Tennessee is poised to lead the nation with an electric vehicle demonstration project led by the Department of Energy and industry partners.

At a ceremony May 25, 2011 at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, industry and lab officials celebrated the completion of 25 solar-assisted electric vehicle charging stations. These join six Electric Power Research Institute stations that were completed in Knoxville earlier this year. The remaining 94 stations are scheduled to be finished by the spring of 2012.

Officials expect the visibility of this project to have a promotional effect that encourages consumers to purchase or lease electric vehicles, which will reduce demand for gasoline and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Wind and solar power systems at the Burger King in Waghäusel generate one third of the restaurant’s electricity needs. The more than 720 solar photovoltaic modules at the site can generate over 53,500 kWh of electricity per year, and the wind turbine, about 2,500 kWh annually. The restaurant also has a solar-powered electric vehicle charging station for plug-in cars as well as a rainwater reclamation system for  landscape irrigation.
