Are you ready to join Volt + LEAF + solar club?

leaf-volt-solar1editors-blog-entry3George Parrott and his wife Christine Iwahashi, whom we profiled yesterday on SolarChargedDriving.Com, are living the solar + EV + PHEV dream I hope we’ll be living some day here in Aurora, Colo.

They’ve got a 5.5 kW home solar system on their California home’s rooftop — plus a pure EV, a Nissan LEAF, and a PHEV, a Chevy Volt, which can run between 25 to 40 miles on pure electricity.

And, based on some of the comments people posted to Facebook as well as below our feature article itself in response to George’s and Christine’s inspiring story — which is itself inspired by a strong desire to reduce the air pollution problems that plague the Sacramento, Calif. area — it’s clear that they, and we, are far from alone in our dream.

For instance, there was “Solardog” — a regular SolarChargedDriving.Com reader — noting, “I am jealous!”

Then, of course, there was me, chiming in, and noting that I, too, am jealous, as Parrott and Iwahashi are already doing what it’ll take us probably another two years to do.

We’ve already got the solar — a 5.59 kW system that’s happily pumping out lots of extra electricity that we’re banking for our future EV + PHEV household. A pure EV might arrive in our Colorado driveway by the end of 2011, depending on how the whole Nissan LEAF production and delivery saga plays out. However, that PHEV is probably a ways off for us, as we can’t afford two new car payments at once right now.

Solar + LEAF in Maryland

There was also a Facebook comment from Rick Angelini, who noted that he’ll be going solar in Maryland in anticipation of having a LEAF delivered sometime in 2011. Rick’s other car: A Toyota Prius.

leaf-windmillsKelly Olsen wrote the following on Facebook: “This is the electric dream and promise of the future here today!” in response to Parrott’s and Iwahashi’s Volt + LEAF + solar combination.

Finally, there was Jim Hopf, who noted the following on Facebook:

“Just got my Volt on Friday 3/18/2011, same day, Nissan notified me that My Leaf will be ready for delivery week of 4/18/2011. I plan to join the club!”

And, of course, if you’d like to take things a step further, we’d love to have you join SolarChargedDriving.Com’s Sun MilesĀ® Club, which is designed with exactly this idea in mind, namely as an online community for those interested in ditching oil for electricity and sun power to share their stories with one another.
