Green isn't enough for many potential EV buyers

While interest in alternative vehicles may be growing, consumers do not see ‘green’ as the only purchasing factor and are demanding more from automakers, according to a study conducted by the global marketing research firm Accenture.

Accenture’s study, which surveyed a total of more than 1,800 people in five different countries, showed that six out of 10 consumers are more likely to buy a hybrid or electric vehicle only when it is superior to gasoline-only models in every way.

Electric vehicles, even those at the more affordable end of the spectrum, are too pricey for most citizens of developing countries, countries whose emissions are increasing every day.

A new low-cost solar-powered electric vehicle has the potential to allow growth and consumerism in the developing world, at the same time cutting carbon outputs.

The electric vehicle, called the CAR +, was announced at the Greener Gadgets Conference in New York on Feb. 25. The vehicle has a solar panel on the roof, and is configured with identically-molded sections on the front and back to be manufactured easily.

Can't afford a Nissan LEAF? Rent one with Hertz

Hertz will begin renting the Nissan LEAF to customers in Europe and the U.S. in 2011.

Hertz has entered into a joint commitment with Nissan to bring zero-emission mobility to car rental in the U.S. and Europe by early 2011. Under the terms of their Memorandum of Understanding, Hertz will develop a program for the roll-out of the Nissan LEAF at select rental sites in both Europe and the U.S.

EV firm re-launches, takes aim at global warming

Detroit Electric, the early 20th century electric vehicle manufacturer, has re-launched into a world-wide venture with offices in the Netherlands and Hong Kong.

The company is looking to place roots once again in Michigan, and plans to establish engineering headquarters in Ann Arbor, according to a story on AnnArbor.com.
