SolarChargedDriving.Com news features
Our news features section comprises the heart of the magazine. Here, we publish original news content focused on various aspects of the fascinating and potentially revolutionary synthesis between solar power and electric driving. We zero in on general news and information, people, and companies and products from both the solar and EV and PHEV worlds. But some of our original content is more general. For instance, we cover news, information, people, companies and products in the fossil fuel realm as well, though we do so from a critical -- but also multiple-perspective -- angle.
Pedestrian, bike groups not as loud on EV noise
In this story, the third in a multi-part series on the debate over plug-in and hybrid vehicles' comparative quiet and the potential effect of this on pedestrian and biker safety, SolarChargedDriving.Com spotlights the perspective of pedestrian and bicycle safety advocates in the U.S. on this issue. Other installments of the series:Part 1: EV drivers add voices to noise and safety debate Part 2: NFB pushes for constant noise to be added to EVs Part 3: Pedestrian, bike groups not as loud as NFB on EV noise As the debate on adding artificial noise to plug-in vehicles and to hybrid cars unfolds, bicyclist and pedestrian advocacy groups have so far been among the quieter communities in the discussion. Though bicycle and pedestrian advocacy groups have not been as vocal as, for example, blind advocacy groups, views have been expressed on either side of the issue. “This is an area that’s becoming a concern,” says director of the University of North Carolina Highway Safety Research Center (HSRC) David Harkey. Solar-charged in Slovenia![]() (Photo courtesy of Andrej Pečjak) Meet Andrej Pečjak. He could very well be the first, and possibly only, solar-charged driver in Slovenia, a small, beautiful country of two million people sandwiched between Austria, Italy, Croatia and Hungary. Pečjak's pushing the envelope of solar-charged driving in Slovenia primarily for one reason: “I wanted to prove it is possible to drive emissions free,” he says. In this story, the second in a multi-part series on the debate over plug-in and hybrid vehicles' comparative quiet and the potential effect of this on pedestrian and biker safety, SolarChargedDriving.Com spotlights the perspective of advocates for the blind in the U.S. on this issue. Part 1: EV drivers add voices to noise and safety debate Part 2: NFB pushes for constant noise to be added to EVs Part 3: Pedestrian, bike groups not as loud as NFB on EV noise The National Federation of the Blind (NFB), an advocacy group that works to represent the interests of the approximately 1.3 million blind people in the U.S., wants Congress to pass a law which would require automakers to add an artificial sound-emitting device to plug-in vehicles and hybrids. The NFB is lobbying for a device that would produce a constant sound. This would mean that some artificial sound would be emitted whether the car is in motion or not.
