80+ U.S. cities set March warmth records

weather-warmth-march-2012You may or may not be one of those people who believe that humans are playing a significant role in climate change [we happen to be thoroughly convinced that humans and their fossil-fueled ways, driving including, are playing a big role.]

But unless you’re living in an alternate universe [seems to us that climate change deniers are], it’s pretty much impossible to reasonably deny that big global climate changes are under way.

Take the month of March in the United States, for instance. According to Weather.Com, more than 80 U.S. cities – all east of the Rocky Mountains – set records for the warmest March on record. Some exceeded the previous March records by a huge amount. For instance, Chicago was five degrees warmer than average in March 2012.

Chicago’s balmy March
Chicago isn’t an individual blip either – the individual weather event argument is a favorite for climate-change deniers who, if you take this argument to its logical extreme, can claim there is no climate change at all because, you guessed it, in the end, every weather event can be reduced to the individual event, no matter that individual events in fact add up to create a collective whole, eh?

After all, more than 80 other U.S. cities broke marks for the warmest March on record. And, if you’re going to say, well, it’s just one month – and climate change deniers are going to say this, set March 2012 in the U.S. against these long-term, global statistics:

  • Last decade: Warmest on record.
  • Ten of the earth’s 11 warmest years have occurred since 2001.
  • All 13 of the warmest years have occurred since 1997.
  • 35 consecutive years in which the global temperature has been above average.

Now what we need, and, thankfully, we’re seeing a lot more of it lately, is individual action to combat our fossil-fuel driven ways.

And – you knew it was coming 😉 – one of the best ways to do this is to charge an electric with solar (yes, walking/biking to work, etc. is better). Indeed, a big thank to the small but growing number of people who are already doing this. You’re helping to cut back on global fossil fuel use at an absolutely crucial time in human, and global, history.
