Nissan LEAF now available in more than 20 states

leaf-21-statesIt might not be happening as fast as Nissan seemed to imply it would in April 2010 when it first opened reservations for its all-electric LEAF. However, slowly but surely more and more people in more and more places in the U.S. who plunked down $99 to reserve a LEAF a year and a half ago are getting a chance to actually order a LEAF.

Nissan officially opened LEAF ordering for the original April 2010 LEAF leapers in six new states ā€“ Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey and New York on Sept. 29.

Coupled with the announcement of the first official consumer delivery of a LEAF in Canada, and the delivery of the 7,000th LEAF in the U.S., the news indicates that all-electric driving is beginning to make significant geographic inroads in North America.

More states to follow
That means the LEAF is now available to order in 21 of 50 states.

According to Nissan, by the end of 2011, consumers in Delaware, Indiana, Louisiana, Nevada, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Rhode Island will be able to order a LEAF as well. Of course, that means people in more than 20 states, including many who reserved a LEAF in April 2010, will still be awaiting their chance to order a LEAF come early 2012.

Those who made reservations for a LEAF from Colorado, Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, New Jersey and New York in April 2010 will be given preference to order until Oct. 3 when Nissan will throw open the ordering process for everyone else in those states interested in buying a LEAF.

ā€œConsumers have spoken, and itā€™s clear that they are looking for a car that produces zero emissions and uses no gas,ā€ said Brian Carolin, senior vice president, Sales and Marketing, Nissan North America. ā€œWe are seeing tremendous consumer interest in the Nissan LEAF in these new markets, particularly in the New York metropolitan area.ā€
