Germany kicks U.S. butt on solar gas stations

solartankstelle1Germany is way ahead of the U.S. on solar. This despite the fact that it’s much, much smaller than the U.S., the fact that it has about one-quarter of the population of the U.S., and the fact that it has a helluva lot less sun.

Okay, so the fact that Germany has approximately 20 times as much installed solar capacity as the sun-abundant and far larger United States isn’t news to anyone who follows solar.

But here’s something that might be: According to a web site we just discovered, Solartankstelle.com, Germany has literally hundreds of solar-powered EV charging stations. That’s far more than the U.S., which almost certainly has fewer than 100 such stations, and maybe even as few as half that.

Solar EV charging stations in U.S.
We’re trying valiantly to keep track of all solar-powered EV charging stations, especially those in the U.S., on our Global Map of Solar-Powered Plug-in Stations. We’ve plotted only about 40 such stations in the U.S. so far, though we concede that we’re definitely missing some that are out there (please help us map these by sending us an e-mail at [email protected] with addresses of solar EV charging stations we’ve missed on our map).

How close 40 is to the actually number of solar-powered EV charging stations in the U.S. is a bit of a guessing game — remember we’re talking about the total number solar-powered EV charging stations not the total number of solar carports in the U.S. (large numbers of solar carports do NOT include an EV charging station).

But it’s fairly clear to us, now that we’ve disovered Solartankestelle.Com’s map of “solar gas stations” in Germany (see picture above), that, just as with solar itself, the U.S. has a lot of catching up to do in establishing itself as a solar gas station leader.

It’s also clear that we’ve got some work of our own to do if our Global Map of Solar-Powered Plug-in Stations is going to be up to date šŸ˜‰

Sehr gut gemacht Deutschland!
