Tesla Motors is showing folks Down Under how clean a sports car can run with a 3,000 kilometer (1,865 mile) Tesla Roadster tour across Eastern Australia that will be powered by renewable energy.

According to Tesla, throughout the Oz Goes Electric Tour, the Roadster will charge using solar, wind, hydro and biomass energy provided by the Australian utility AGL Resources.

The so-called ‘Oz Goes Electric Tour’ kicked off March 16. The tour, covering Victoria, New South Wales and Queensland, will feature test drive events and public displays of the Roadster. In Victoria, the tour is part of the local governmentā€™s Electric Vehicle Trial.

ā€œThis road trip is a milestone. Itā€™s the first time an electric vehicle has traveled a significant distance in Australia, charging along the way,ā€ said Jay McCormack, Australian National Sales Manager for Tesla. ā€œMany Australians will be seeing an EV for the first time, and we want them to see with their own eyes that electric cars can perform just as well as conventional cars without the emissions.ā€

Powered by the most energy-dense battery in the industry, the Roadster accelerates from 0 to 100 kph in less than 4 seconds and consumes no petroleum. The Roadster can travel more than 200 miles on a single charge and plugs into nearly any electrical outlet. The Roadster also holds the record for distance driven on a single charge in a production electric vehicle, 311 miles, which was set in Australia a couple of years ago.

The Tesla Roadster is available for purchase in Australia today.
