Hawaii’s got a lot of sun, but unfortunately most of its electricity is generated by the burning of oil (77%) with most of the rest generated by the burning of coal. This currently makes Hawaii one of the worst places in the U.S. to plug in an electric car – at least if your benchmark is renewable energy generated electricity.

That’s changing, though, as Hawaii invests more and more in developing its abundant renewable energy resources, most notably sun and wind, and as more and more people in Hawaii go solar.

Now those going solar in Hawaii will be able to do so without the big upfront costs that have traditionally stymied individual solar initiative. SunRun, which offers solar customers the option to go solar with no money down through its groundbreaking residential solar power purchase agreement, has just expanded to the Aloha State.

SunRun pioneered affordable home solar with the first residential power purchase agreement in 2007. It now has over 5,000 customers in seven U.S. States — Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawaii, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.
